Welcome to the heart of summer. Here at Hervana, we’ve dedicated this month to the July Joy Series: a time to strip away the "shoulds" and "musts" and instead, lean into the soft, quiet rhythm of our own bodies.
Often, when we think of "wellness," we think of a destination. We think of a goal we haven't reached yet or a version of ourselves that is perfectly balanced and perpetually calm. But true wellness isn't a finish line; it’s the quality of the journey. It is the pleasure of presence.
In our fast-paced world, presence can sometimes feel like another chore on the to-do list. We’re told to "be mindful" while we're rushing to work, packing lunches, or navigating the complexities of our health. But what if presence wasn't a task? What if it was an invitation to notice the tiny, beautiful things that are already here?
Today, let’s explore how the simple act of being present can be the most profound medicine for your nervous system and your pelvic health.
The Body-Mind Connection: Why Joy Matters for Your Pelvic Floor
As a pelvic floor physiotherapist, I often see women who are "holding" it all together. This tension isn't just in the mind; it manifests physically. When we live in a state of chronic stress: always anticipating the next task: our nervous system gets stuck in a "fight or flight" response.
This state of high alert often leads to a "gripping" of the pelvic floor muscles. We hold our breath, we clench our jaw, and we tighten our core. Over time, this constant tension can lead to discomfort, pelvic pain, or even issues with bladder and bowel function. This is why understanding the breath-pelvic floor connection is so vital to our healing journey.
When we intentionally seek out joy: even in the smallest moments: we send a signal to our nervous system that we are safe. This "cue of safety" allows our muscles to soften and our breath to deepen. Joy isn't just a luxury; it is a physiological necessity for a healthy, functioning body.

Finding Your "Glimmers"
You may have heard of "triggers," those moments that spark anxiety or stress. But have you heard of glimmers?
Glimmers are the opposite of triggers. They are micro-moments of safety, connection, and joy. They are the tiny things that make your heart feel a little lighter for just a second. A glimmer might be:
The way the sunlight hits your favorite plant in the morning.
The smell of fresh coffee before you take the first sip.
The sound of a bird outside your window.
The feeling of cool linen against your skin.
At Hervana, we believe that pelvic floor physiotherapy is about more than just exercises; it's about reclaiming your sense of safety in your own body. By training our brains to notice glimmers, we begin to regulate our nervous system from the inside out. We move away from the chaos and toward the haven.

Simple Rituals for Everyday Presence
Finding joy doesn't require a grand gesture or a week-long retreat (though we love those too!). It can happen right in the middle of your Tuesday. Here are a few minimalist ways to practice the pleasure of presence:
1. The Morning Light Ritual
Before you reach for your phone: before the world rushes in: spend two minutes by a window or outside. Let the natural light hit your eyes. Feel the air on your skin. This simple act helps regulate your circadian rhythm and anchors your nervous system for the day ahead.
2. Mindful Movement
Instead of a high-intensity workout that feels like a punishment, try a few minutes of mindful movement. This could be a gentle seated twist or simply lying on the floor with your hands on your belly. Notice the rise and fall of your breath. Feel where your body meets the ground. These are the moments where we truly reconnect with our body’s wisdom.

3. Savoring the Senses
Our senses are the doorway to the present moment. Choose one activity today: washing your hands, drinking tea, or putting on lotion: and do it with 100% of your attention. Notice the temperature, the texture, and the scent. When we engage our senses, we tell our brain: I am here. I am safe. I am okay.
4. The Evening Softening
As the day winds down, create a "softening" ritual. This might involve a warm sauna session or a simple foot soak. Use a few drops of lavender or eucalyptus to cue your body that it is time to rest. Let go of the day's expectations and allow yourself to simply be.

As you move through this week, I invite you to look for one glimmer. Just one. Notice how it feels in your body: in your chest, in your belly, in your pelvic floor. Let that feeling of joy take up space. You deserve the peace that presence brings.

Restorative Experiences and the Power of Sisterhood
While finding joy in solitude is beautiful, there is a unique magic that happens when we find it together. At Hervana, we offer Restorative Experiences designed to take you deeper into this state of presence.
Whether it’s a mindful movement class or a seasonal retreat, these gatherings are a sanctuary where you can pause, breathe, and heal naturally. In our Rooted programs, we walk beside you with compassion, helping you listen to your body again.
There is a profound sense of "sisterhood" when we realize we aren't alone in our struggles or our desires for peace. Sharing a moment of presence with another woman who understands the journey can be one of the most regulating glimmers of all.
A Sanctuary Within
The pleasure of presence isn't about ignoring the hard things; it’s about creating a haven within yourself so you can navigate them with more grace. It’s about knowing that even on the busiest days, there is a quiet space inside you that is always accessible.
